It sounds like your school already has non-digital systems in place for that and that’s great. For the schools who up until this year allowed phones at some point during the day, and still use only text, email, and the student portal to disseminate information, it’s more challenging. I’m not advocating for phones, I’m saying that this was a fast change for the schools and some of them have not developed non-digital workarounds yet, which is a downside.

Edmund Burke has pretty much banned them for the most part and will be transitioning to a more formal policy with locked phone pouches starting in December.

I’m the BI poster. I was talking about the kids not getting the message from the SCHOOL about sports transportation plans changing (e.g bus was supposed to leave at 1:30 and now it’s 2:15) or when the kids want to stay after and there’s no way to let the parents know mid-day.

My kid is at a K-8 in moco. I know you said HS. They have a cell phone ban though. They have to stay in lockers. No use at lunch or recess.
I’m happy with it. If they’re caught with one it goes to office and parent has to pick it up.

Really dumb question - did an open house yesterday at a school and phones were banned bell to bell (LOVE it!) - do they also include smart watches? Our k-8 does not and kids are texting during class - I see it going off on my kids devices at home

Georgetown Prep also changed their policy this year. No cell phones in classes or during lunch. I'm very happy with this policy as a parent.

VaDept of Education advocates for this and some local publics have implemented it this school year. Our HS has had a rule that no phones can be out in any academic building, you will get detention if you are seen on it even in the hallway.

HOWEVER, lunch and study periods the phones are all being used. We noticed a sheer decline in the number of kids conversing, going to the field to throw around a ball, etc. This generation they are playing video games or on social media during this time. We strictly monitor our HS jr but it's an uphill battle when every other kid is on them during this time.

We are going to raise this with our HS and see what can be done. I realize kids travel from all over to get to our HS and nobody is saying not to bring them to school---just that they be stored and off completely for the school day.

The studies are loud that phones are a detriment to kids and in school particularly.

Thoughts?


They are banned everywhere on our campus, whether you are in an academic or non-academic building or even outside. If sound, the Dean confiscates them until the end of the day. My DD has said it makes such a big difference in her ability and others’ willingness to socialize.

We are at Georgetown Visitation.


I wish Gonzaga would do this.


I wish SSFS would too.
