It's not ideal to be hugging. I was taught to always give a side-hug if possible.

I teach prek. I'm not really a hugger in general but kids sometimes initiate and sometimes a kid just looks like they could use a hug so I ask if they would like one.

I teach 5th and do hug-handshake-high 5-or-wave on the way out. It always surprises me how many kids pick the hug. It is definitely a quick and sideways or sort of arms-length hug.

This is what we are told too. If they initiate we can hug back in a brief, non weird way. I usually just do a one-arm, side-hug thing.
