I also think of north face as expensive. I like in Chicago - my biggest advice is knee length. LL bear, rei etc are all plenty warm

Someone above said expensive jackets get stolen, but there are colleges were people are wearing Canada Goose and Moncler.
Their current winter coat is fine for now and give then a budget for if they want to order something else in a few months.
The only collegse where I've seen Canada Goose an Moncler are NYU and Columbia.

Mine doesn't. Didn't have an actual winter coat until well into the winter months. Definitely no boots.

Yes, but I assume most kids won’t be wearing them until after Xmas when it’s much harder to find stuff in stock. Plus she is super supper busy and hates to shop so o thought I could send her some links to options online. If left to her own devices she’ll grab something at target when she’s there buying cold medicine and it will not be sufficiently warm because it will be too cheap. I think targets the only store she can get to easily.
She does everything for herself and is super independent. I do so little for her that I’d like to try to help her out with the stuff she doesn’t care about, which includes stuff like winter coats. It’s a two way street — she does all my tech support for me.

Honestly, i think you need to unclench OP. There will be plenty of coats available online after xmas. Plus, if she's somewhere really cold, they'll be wearing their very warm winter stuff by November 15. If she's not somewhere really cold, she can live with something cheap. And if she ends up at target.... so what? She'll be fine. I went to college somewhere way colder than anywhere in continental US and I remember when it first started snowing in November of my first year, a bunch of us went out and bought boots and coats together. It was fun and bonding. The coats were cheap but lasted a couple years and kept me plenty warm. These are learning experiences.

Lands end or Ll bean. Longest style she’s likely to wear- at least butt length but ideally to knees.
Boots: I got through multiple Boston winters with ankle height shearling-lined waterproof leather Timberlands.

Mine wore either a North Face or Patagonia stadium length coat and either Blundstones or Bean boots depending on how cold or how much snow there was.

My Cornell kid only wore her boots a few times and her "coat" was a fleece too. Do not assume your kids will bundle up. My evven more upstate NY kid wore an LL Bean down jacket.
