I took them out on fun activities for the day. Your kids grow up really fast and these are opportunities to watch them grow.

+1. There are a lot of one day camp options for that age. We’re in Arlington and there are gymnastics camps (Kips), Tea with Mrs. B, Love the Ball soccer camp, etc. These are great for days off when you need to work, but they follow the public school calendar. If you’re at a k-12 (or maybe even a k-8), maybe see if there might be a middle schooler or high schooler who might want to babysit on some of the random days off that only your school is closed.

I take the day off. My husband has a much more demanding job so I cover the kids. I look at it as a bonus day with the kiddos—I request the days with my boss as soon as school calendars are out.

We try to take turns. DS has more annual leave, so tends to do it more. I really wish I had more annual leave, but I just don't. On Federal holidays, we both have the holiday, so both are home.

We sometimes take DC to parks or museums on such days, depending on weather and what happens to be open/closed that day.

Right but there are day camps for the public school days off. Unless your private happens to calendar like a local public, you're SOL

PS - when my kids were in a k-8, the school offered an option to pay for care (same people who ran aftercare) for days to cover spring break or teacher conference days - but not usually long weekends that get extended (like fall break).

Camp or we work at home (with DH and I switching off to hang with kids or they get screen time). Sometimes I will just take the day off to go do fun stuff mid-week when things are less crowded. As they get older drop of play dates become an option and parents can trade hosting based on who needs to work when.
