Liar.

Rumor: FEMA will ONLY provide $750 to disaster survivors to support their recovery.
Fact: This is false. This is a type of assistance that you may be approved for soon after you apply, called Serious Needs Assistance. It is an upfront, flexible payment to help cover essential items like food, water, baby formula, breastfeeding supplies, medication and other emergency supplies. There are other forms of assistance that you may qualify for to receive and Serious Needs Assistance is an initial payment you may receive while FEMA assesses your eligibility for additional funds. As your application continues to be reviewed, you may still receive additional forms of assistance for other needs such as support for temporary housing, personal property and home repair costs. If you have questions about your disaster assistance application and what you qualify for, contact us at 1-800-621-3362 to speak with a FEMA representative in your language.
FEMA has had to launch a special web page to correct misinformation like the one first PP posted. Here is the link:

Well "the hurricane belt" now includes Asheville NC.
So I guess we stop building everywhere from Florida all the way up to New Jersey/New York, which have also been damaged by hurricanes. BTW, that includes DC area which has also been hit.
Sure. But there are places where things come together for true once in 100 year storms, which having lived in NC most of my life and in Asheville for a couple of years, appears to be what happened there. And, there are places that are getting hit for the 3rd time in a decade with a 100 year storm. Places where people aren’t done rebuilding before they get hit again.
But yes, I think climate change will eventually require most of us to stop denying it and start rethinking how we have always done things. Including WNC. If nothing else, this storm showed that large positions are S— outta luck if I-40 and/or I-29 are out of commission. And I would hope the rebuilding effort would start with looking at what went wrong, how much of it was freakishly bad luck vs a problem waiting to happen, and rebuild smarter, with an eye towards mitigating risks and creating better ingress and egress.
And yes, this also includes DC. We might not like to think about it, but eventually the National Mall will be underwater. I think we are more prepared for a disaster in terms of evacuation and shelter Jin place than many places by virtue of living someplace planned with an eye towards terrorism, a nuclear threat, etc. but are in serious denial about the fact DC is basically a swamp. Current building codes should be revised with an eye towards 50 years from now.
And if your house in FL keeps getting destroyed, either pay out of pocket the full cost of the rebuild, carry market rate insurance, or let FEMA buy your property, which is in the long run cheaper than a rebuild. This is not sustainable.

Actually stupid Ron DeSantis is the one who told the feds not to bother coming to Florida, the state government had things all under control. Then he flew off to fix the strike at the ports.
He's a real piece of work.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Yesterday, Governor Ron DeSantis announced the launch of Operation Blue Ridge, a comprehensive multi-state agency response aimed at assisting North Carolina and Tennessee in their recovery efforts following the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene. Operation Blue Ridge will mobilize a coordinated effort involving the Florida Division of Emergency Management, Florida State Guard, Florida National Guard, Florida Department of Transportation, Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, a Florida Law Enforcement Coordination Task Force, and a dedicated Law Enforcement Strike Team.
Additionally, under Governor Ron DeSantis’ leadership, Operation Blue Ridge is helping Floridians seeking rescue in Western North Carolina. Those in need of assistance are encouraged to fill out the form at FloridaDisaster.org/OperationBlueRidge.

+1 I am also in Florida - in Tampa Bay actually. The Tampa area is blue, by the way - and we have mayors who are working on climate resilience. But it's not easy or fast. It's unreal, that said, that we are getting another one while we are nowhere near even starting to recover from the last one.
At least this guy isn't in charge.
Yes, but that's who Florida wants to be in charge, so...
Florida has entire blue counties, many blue cities.
And you know what— hurricanes don’t care how you vote, despite what MTG is saying on Twitter about the Biden Admin “directing” hurricanes to red areas. I expect a federal bailout for a onetime, unforeseen disaster. WNC certainly counts. I’m tired of bailing out the same cities and homeowners over and over, subsidizing their flood insurance, etc. Red or Blue. After the federal government has bailed you out 2-3 times, you need to pay for repairs yourself, buy insurance and pay through the nose (if you can), or move.
That said, I do support tax credits for relocating and/hardening buildings and homes against climate change.
