I’d argue that the people who trash the school at every opportunity are just as bad.

Coming from a non-WM person, no way. WM boosters aren't even close.

No shame in feeling happy about really exciting news

The W&M boosters are almost as comical as our other resident boosters.

As an alumna, I’m excited to see W&M’s growth and expansion. With this news and the recent investment to expand the marine science program, the future is bright for the Tribe!

DP: It's an highly selective undergraduate focused institution--it's aim is not to become a STEM-research hub on the scale of a big research university, but to prepare highly qualified undergraduates. They have already been doing this very well in the sciences (physics, chemistry, marine sciences are particular strengths) for decades (centuries actually!). Their recent school of computing has already had exceptional outcomes for undergraduates and this move will push this even further. They are going to develop students who are broadly well-educated with real STEM strengths. I don't think of it as "behind the times"--rather they are doing the right thing at the right time . It's not in W&M's mission to provide the kind of specialized computer science education more appropriate to a tech school so it's good they developed it slowly so it can be a solid, thoughtful approach rather than always retrofitting a cobbled together program. Different institutions provide different kinds of educational value. W&M is not of the bootcamp and certification type nor is it of the PhD/post-doc driven research lab type. STEM undergraduates at W&M will get a solid coherent CS education and be able to be meaningfully involved in faculty research. It's not a zero sum game--this is excellent news for our state and region because we definitely need people with this kind of education.

Because I'm sure you're just SO knowledgeable on that. An Associate in "Keyboard Warrior-ing" sure means a lot more today I guess.

Are you offering yourself as knowledgeable?
Yes I think an individual with a PhD in computational physics can derive meaning from a press statement. My lord you people are arrogant.

DP anyone can make up that they have a degree lol

Great? Are you willing to engage now or just continue wasting our time. This is such a stupid argument.

I'll engage - your comment was unsubstantiated and overall just pointless. It's a news article not a founding document that details every single plan for the school. The dean hasn't even started yet - no rational reason beyond trolling to already start making claims it's "behind with the times".

Article seems pretty clear about the intentions and plan for the school, and it doesn’t seem that ambitious. PP’s thumb was more in the scale than you
