It's part of yield management. A lot more schools have it now than even 2 years ago (Duke, WashU, Vanderbilt, Wake, Midd)....

If you don't do it, schools may think you are not interested in the school.

And yes, they are looking to see if you "fit in"

Brown has had their video for whole. Noticed Glimpse starting last year, my understanding is that they couldn’t interview with the test optional applicant pools and this was solution. You can speculate how it’s used, but I do been that was original intent. My personal opinion is to not be flashy on editing unless that is students speciality and instead just go for genuine and well-spoken.

There’s a lot written about this in various places and professional counselors will tell you why:

1. International candidates: a lot of people have others write their essays, especially coming from international communities. They want to make sure the kids will be able to participate in class; speaking English well.

2. On the domestic front, they want to see a full picture of the candidate, especially when there is not an interview. They are not looking for room of wallflowers, nor are they looking for a room full of, gregarious social kids. They want a mix. They’ll be able to tell who “fits” what they are looking for.

Note that it’s obviously subject to the AO own biases and preferences. Plan accordingly.

You impute good faith to the schools and I hope you are right. I feared it was a workaround to circumvent the recent Supreme Court ruling and enabling AOs to go back to emphasizing race in admissions.

No help is needed. Good grief. My kid did glimpse and other similar "optional" videos for at least 3 schools. They made each up themselves! They got into multiple top 10 schools, including the ones with videos. Come on this is not hard. If a kid needs a private counselor for any of this application stuff they should not be applying to elites. They will not do well at ivy/elite: they are filled with intelligent, creative go-getters who do not need mommy to seek help on this or anything else.

Agreed. These schools know those kids who deserve to be there and will do well. My kid has asked for and needed no adult assistance in this process. This is who these schools are looking for, and not kids whose parents need to hire an "essay coach" or video producer. Get a grip, parents!
