Man here. The fit is most important. If he wants high quality, go to Nordstrom. For a little more stylish (but lower quality), go to Zara.

Skip the Gap, Banana Republic, and Abercrombie. Way too boring and usually not a great fit either.

I have similar issues with my Dh. He wants me to dress him. But he’s also picky when I’m buying. He occasionally will say- I need new jeans. And I’m expected to provide him with 5 pairs that he can try on at home and choose from. I’m not opposed because I like shopping but it’s wild still to me.

I mean ... WFH meetings are on Zoom right? So no one is even going to see his belly.

Man here, maybe the button down not tucked, I tend to do that despite being thin and not having a pronounced belly. Tucked can work a bit "alternative" depending on the size, with the shirt a bit loose on purpose combined (and or) to various extent to having the pants higher waist.
Socks coordinated, not necessarily matching, with dress shoes or pants and shirts, also patterned but not very contrasting patterns, say lilak and blue, but black and white in some interlaced pattern can work as it doesn't punch the eye like say yellow and light blue (:.

I'm lolling at the link to the Irish waistcoats. Over a big belly? No!!

OP you're balking at the tucked in button down with jeans because it's a fashion mullet, way formal on top, way casual on bottom. You just need to adjust that level of formality with the fabric choice. If he's set on jeans at home, then a nice polo with a sport coat still looks polished for work from home. You could also do a crew neck cashmere sweater under a sport coat.

I think a nice sweater would be a fine alternative to a button down, but I also think adults are able to choose their own clothes even if they don't always pick the most flattering choices!

There’s Untucked brand of shirts.
That might work with jeans.

Men with big stomachs wearing shorts untucked button downs look like they are wearing tents.
