I remember this! There were amazing houses throughout the District that you could rent and share with five others for cheap living costs. This option is basically gone now.

Of course it's okay. However, there are many factors involved so it may work well for one family and not for the other. Even in same family, it may work well for one kid but end up in estrangement or failure for launch for the other. If it doesn't seem like a good idea to you or your kid, you can always subsidize their living or they can learn to live the lifestyle they can afford and have more will to improve it.

Do young adults still do that? I thought they just move back home and make videos crying about how expensive everything is.

What if they take a job across the country…are you buying them a house?

DS is paying 2200 a month for an efficiency in Seattle. While he loves it...he admits it would be great if he was saving the $$ for a down payment. Unfortunately he did not find a job in DC.

OP, why do you get to decide what the definition of OK vs. “failure to launch” is? And before you come up with any of your obvious retorts, my kids are 11 and 8.

Cultures around the world have different norms, environmental and economic factors are at play, and stop trying to define everything. How about you do what works for your household, and don’t go throwing the word “failure” around about other people. I have a cousin who lived with her parents into her early 30s because her mom battled cancer for many years, then her dad had Parkinson’s. She never got the opportunity to NOT be a member of the “sandwich generation.”

I did this 20 years ago and was able to buy a townhouse then a house and then another house. I was able to keep each property and create rental income. I currently live in a big million dollar home.

My parents were ahead of their time and encouraged me to do it. I am in a great financial position now and will encourage my kids to do it. It doesn’t take long. A few years of sacrifice for long term gain.

It’s not failure to launch if you have an end goal. I lunched into a fabulous financial future.

They should pay rent in a terrible neighborhood with a group of friends, party their ars off, Uber eats late at night and 5 years later complain about the cost of housing and bemoan the inability to put 20% down,

Of course, it is okay. What are we supposed to do? Be monsters who don't let them come home after finishing college? Are they supposed to live on the street while applying for jobs?

It’s a relationship killer. Better to buy them a condo, the DCUM way. 😉

Clearly it's not a black and white thing. If your kid is living at home with no job: bad. If your kid is living at home with a job and no friends: not great. If your kid has a job, friends, etc then fine!

I think it is smart. Save money for a down payment for a couple of years.
