Why not JMU? Strange question. It's a great, traditional college experience that attracts a ton of applicants.

I have a kid, currently a 10th grader, who will likely have a similar profile as yours- and interestingly he is also interested in pre vet (but not particularly academically inclined). He wants a medium sized school, with school spirit but in the NE or Rockies (he’s very into the outdoors and an avid skier). We’ll need merit aid to afford much above in state at UMD. What other schools are on your list?
Just putting in a plug for Colorado State for this kid. My DD loved her time there (not pre-vet but went in with similar interests), and they offer guaranteed merit for nonresidents based on GPA (and I believe use weighted GPA to calculate it). The only downside is that I will never get her back from Colorado! It would probably cost less than JMU.

It's a good question. Wants large school with school spirit and we have a family friend who went there recently and had a good experience. I'm trying to steer her towards Towson too, but JMU checks a lot of boxes for her and us (not too far from home & she's outdoorsy). Obviously in-state in MD would be better financially, but anecdotally it seems JMU is good for students who may be a little beaten down from the W school grind. Interested in pre-vet (they have a minor that appeals to her) but I suspect that will change because science is not an academic strength.
Good luck. I will say I’ve never run into someone who went there who didn’t thoroughly enjoy their time there.

Does MCPS report semester grades? I think colleges really only look at final grades. I’m assuming those classes ended up with something higher than a C?
