To clarify after reading some posts here:

The award does not come from "Duke" and is not affiliated with the school or anything directly linked to the school (i.e. alum or anything else).

The award did not require a "strong" interest in "Duke." It only required "an" interest in attending the school.

+1 I feel like this would qualify as demonstrated interest in "Duke" but also demonstrated disinterest in any school other than "Duke".

OP said kid has so many awards and activities that they don’t all fit in the common app, hence the desire to attach a fuller resume.

Don’t attach a resume. It weakens the power of your 10 ECs

Do NOT include this award as it is a small scholarship award to a specific school which is not Duke.

This would be Sara H advice too btw. Someone asked a similar question there recently.

- include all book awards.

- include any award you want if you have room to fill in the 5 slots. better to put this in than leave it empty

- exception would be if it's a need-based scholarship/award and school you're applying to is need-aware.

I received the Wellesley Book Award back in the day - can’t remember if it was for academic achievement or community service or character - and yes, I included it on my applications to all schools. You perhaps could be correct, but I am not aware of any in the DMV. I know GW awards scholarships to DC students, but you have to actually attend GW.

It doesnt't sound like OP's kid won some science fair award sponsored by MIT, but rather it was an award where you wrote some essay indicating why you were interested in Duke. It's strange that the organization that provides the award doesn't actually require the kid to attend Duke, or so it seems.

Post was confusing but understandable, if I’m correct in understanding that this award, while it required high stats and achievements, also requires the recipient to expressly state a strong interest in attending the school that gave the award, and the award is closely and easily tied to that school (although the school name is not in the award). Especially if the school is “akin to Duke” in a way that makes it well-known, other schools are likely already aware of this award without having to google it. All of that suggests that any school that isn’t the one that gave the award will know easily that your kid really wants to go to the school that gave the award, not to their school. I would not include it.
