It's too late

My best friend has a doctorate in anthropology.

He's unemployed. Too many anthropology professors, not enough anthropology jobs. Luckily he married a very successful architect.

But in all seriousness, of his friends who are employed, about half are professors and the other half work in advertising and are extraordinarily well-paid. I think the idea is that they can talk insightfully about humans and what humans like, what culture is, how to define culture, blah blah blah

He interviewed at McKinsey, because places like that also want big brains who can help dissect "cultural" issues, but his speciality was medicine related and they didn't wind up being interested.

Get into and learn how to do cartography aka map making for related interests

Anthropology is broader than culture. It includes the subdisciplines of biology/evolution/ecology, linguistics, archaeology, and yes, cultural anthro.

I think of sociology being more structural and related to social dynamics and behavior — how groups relate to one another, and how individuals relate to groups.

I was always fascinated by anthro — maybe bc it has a wider sweep — but for some reason could never get into sociology.

Read novels and nonfiction books set in different cultures. Doesn’t have to be international, either — for example, Uncanny Valley is a great memoir that is also a smart study of Silicon Valley. Barbarian Days is about surfing subculture. Keep a running list.
