Anonymous wrote:I am currently 30 weeks pregnant and my husband and I have decided to name our baby boy Wesley (we already announced his name). We didn’t think we would run into any problems with this name, but unfortunately, some family members, especially my mother-in-law, keep pronouncing his name as Wez-lee instead of Wess-lee. We have politely corrected multiple times, but they continue to mispronounce it.

I'm not sure if it's just my pregnancy hormones or if I'm overreacting, but I really dislike the "z" sound and prefer the "s" sound in his name. I know it seems like such a minor difference to some, but ever time I hear his name mispronounced, it makes me consider changing his name altogether. FWIW my husband and I usually refer to him as Wes.

Should we go ahead and change his name or should I try to let it go? Please let me know your thoughts.

Are you Methodist?

But yeah, you have gotten a glimpse of what will be a lifelong phenomenon.

I’m from New England, same.

If this will bother you, change the name. Many people would say wezley. And if your kid turns out to have a lisp or if his friends do, they will say wethley.

A Matthew I know was startled recently when I asked if he preferred Matt or Matthew. He said the latter...in any case, once kid is old to talk he can correct people.

I think this is true for Matthews and Michaels. Most assume Matt and Mike.

No, they’re pronouncing the S like a “z”. Like some people do with Leslie, they actually say Lezlie.

Anonymous wrote:My son is named Martin and when he was a baby it drove me crazy when people would pronounce it "Mar-in" with a glottal stop, to the point where i wanted a different name. Now I realize I was just hormonal. This won't bother you in a year or so.

This is literally why I nixed Martin, it would absolutely drive me crazy

Won't work. I say Elvis Prezlee...it must be a regional accent.

Well, you are wrong. Do you call a pez dispenser a piss dispenser?

Considering that Wesleyan University has the argument over the s or the z on campus, you can expect same.

+1 OP, this is a whole life thing. Either you get used to the occasional z, and accept that corrections will be required that don't stick anyway, or you change the name.

Change his name. It is going to bother you forever. In Britain it is Wez ley as in Wez rhymes with Pez.
