My vote is for Cape May. To the extent there are signs of life at the southern Jersey beaches in the off season, it will be there. Plus they do it all up very cute for Christmas.

I don't find it depressing in the winter. Walking to Barnegat Lighthouse is my Christmas tradition.

Most towns in Monmouth county would be best for year round living. Or maybe northern Ocean: Point Pleasant, Bay Head area. Train runs all the way to Bay Head and can get into NYC without driving.

This was 20 years ago, but we had a well-known journalist from the Atlantic that wintered down the street from our house on Cape May Point. If you're looking for quiet and not many people, it's a perfect place!

I second Sea Girt. Cape May is cute, but ton is shut down I believe not in season. A friend owned a small house in Margate and loved it (and regretted selling it-she also rented it out).

There is also a lot within a couple hours driving distance. Princeton, NJ with the university and McCarter Theater for shows or concerts. The university has free events the public can attend. Bucks County, PA with New Hope and Washington Crossing Park.
