This is good advice. You don’t want to opt out of everything hard at TJ. So you should take some AP sciences and at least BC Calc and some of the post AP classes. But you can’t do what kids do at base schools and just load on every tough course. TJ’ tough courses go well well beyond the AP curriculum. The toughest (and I have current students) are BC Calc, AP Physics (c is the only AP offered) and AP Chem. Don’t try to take them all at once. God chance you could end up with a C or B- and no top 10 will be interested in that.

I also had a friend get into Stanford that took regular honors, no IB courses (that were offered at our school)

Do TJ kids who take similar path regarding physics sequence and BC Calc junior year, get into HYPSMC with or without a hook? I know of a bunch that get into Cornell and the non HYP ivies but wondering about HYPSM+caltech

I’m a parent of a TJ kid now at an Ivy. Took honors physics junior year and BC calc. They thought it would be too much to do both, with the rest of the insane TJ curriculum. Did very well. Ended up taking AP physics senior year. It all worked out just fine.
