Most young people would be fine. Tired for one day maybe.

The traffic from LA to San Diego is awful, and factor in a major holiday. The OP's kid could probably get to Denver faster.

I ageee with others that I’d do something like San Diego, LA, Napa or Phoenix (or Tucson—also a direct flight from LA). Someplace that if you get stuck and can’t make it, your kid can get some quickly enough to school. And if things go really wrong and her flight back is cancelled, you can rent a car and just drive her.

It’s an awesome buffet! But as great as it is, you guys should go visit kid instead since DC will have finals shortly after. Does he have whole week off or just Wednesday to Sunday? That also makes a difference too. Cheaper to have him come home than flying multiple people and paying for hotel.

I'm from California and went to college in DC and never ever went home for Thanksgiving. I found extended family and/or friends and started new traditions on the east coast within a drive or train. It's been 23 years and I haven't spend Thanksgiving with my mom except last year when my entire family traveled to the pacific NW to be with my uncle's family (and my mom came from CA). It went pretty smoothly but the traveling was stressful and crowded.

I have no future plans to travel for Thanksgiving ever again!

Time to adjust your expectations and plans and let your kid grow up a bit!

If you do this, let go of the idea of some big meal in a rental/buffet. Go and have fun and try something new, trying to recreate the at home experience will likely be disappointing.

We went to St Maarten with my parents last year and I warned them ahead of time about plans for dinner. Took them a second to realize that the whole turkey feast is best done at home. We had a lovely Italian meal.

Our work is flexible so what we have done is find an airbnb for the week some place within driving distance of the school worth visiting.

Is this the first time you have a kid away for a major holiday?

If she has international or other friends who aren't going home, it might be the first time to adjust to this new situation. My kids have enjoyed learning to cook (bad) turkey with friends.

It's one of the realities of studying across the country or in another country versus studying at UVa or UMd. If she is studying for finals, she might appreciate the extra time to catch up.

As mentioned she will be home a few weeks later for winter break.

When is she coming home for winter break? Three weeks later?

It would be easier for her to fly home than for all of you to fly somewhere.

I may not be the right person to respond given that I didn't grow up with turkey day. We use it as an opportunity for a long weekend at home and avoid hitting the road with everyone else.
