I think the international airport may be the biggest struggle. Most of the NYS airports are international to Canada and maybe some of the Caribbean.

Pick a college town like Ithaca, Clinton, or Geneva.

Looking for cute towns, with access to an international airport within 1-2hrs. We're looking at Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse areas.
Interested in a quiet town, but emphasis on town. We're not looking to be too rural, but a 1 acre lot is ideal. We plan to travel over the next few years to flush out some areas. Looking for recommendations on counties/towns.

Skaneatles is nice and on a lake

This is not near an int’l airport. Unless you count Canada as international.

Adirondack area is stunning.

+1 for Saratoga. It's a cute town, easy access to the Adirondacks, Albany is an okay Airport, NYC is an easy and pretty train ride.

Another vote for Saratoga, also Lake Placid, Rhinebeck and Ithaca if you want Central NY
