Beef stroganoff is always a hit when we do it for Christmas. Can make a mushroom version to go with it for vegetarians in the crowd.

This seems more like actual Christmas dinner to me, that it does an Advent/Christmas party get together.

So what? Pooty pootwell.

I love a themed meal - it's cohesive.

For a German menu:

Rouladen
Schnitzel
Spaetzle
Brats or weisswurst or other sausage

Bee sting cake (bienenstich) or a dobos torte (more Hungarian than German but in the realm and very impressive for a holiday)

Will people be able to sit down or do you want finger foods ? Basically, fork only foods or knife and fork?

I would not do soup at a buffet.

Personally, I would cook a turkey, because I love cooking turkey and spend a lot of time making it flavorful. I'd cater tasty sides from my favorite restaurants, I'd ensure salads and fruit, and while having ~2 desserts I provided, I would also make this the dish others can bring.

No one is going to want Turkey the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

This is a great idea.

Maybe replace one of the meat options with lentil soup.

Because OP's family thinks it's fun?

Why do you need to give advice that isn't responsive to the OP?

This sounds amazing and exactly what I was thinking. Possibly with a great soup.

I wish, but my mother and Aunts would talk about it for the rest of our lives.
