People hate the schools their kids can't/didn't get into--or they didn't get into. They love the ones that take their kids.

Anything considered 'elite' is going to generate a lot of hatred, especially if a fellow classmate or neighbor or someone got in who the poster thinks is beneath or no better than their own child.

That's the formula.

There are certain schools that seem really beloved by their students and alumni, which is slightly different than the question posed. I’m thinking of Syracuse, for example.

Do social people love it? People who want a fun, vibrant collegiate life?

It’s likely complete coincidence, but the most introverted kids we know attend Rice. Personally, it’s odd that in the DMV I know 4 kids at Rice…only know more at UVA vs any one school.

no, the reputation is that it is full of grinders. I keep suggesting it to my kids (twins) and their schools and college counselors (in school and private) keep scaring them away.
It's definitely a beautiful campus and on the surface has a great feel.

Rice is so random. But yeah, Penn students can’t even dialogue about mental health without sounding like complete dbags https://www.thedp.com/article/2021/11/penn-face-mental-health-social-ivy

Some people will think any expensive private is elitist and some people will think any state flagship is too big

No school is universally loved. Not even Hogwarts.

There isn't and I'm not sure why anyone thinks there would be. I went to Chicago and had the time of my life; I was from the South so the "miserable" weather was a great change of pace. I would have hated Florida, but I know people who wouldn't trade their years there for anything. Just like there's people who couldn't imagine living anywhere but New York and people whose idea of paradise is Missoula, college students want different things.
