The kids on the top teams also have lots of 'fillers', same with college rosters. Players that aren't really outstanding. They ended up there for a variety of reasons---no cuts made, seniority, word of mouth, etc., but they don't always end up playing down the road--just taking up spots on the bench.

The kid has to be self-motivated and never satisfied. They need the internal hunger to always improve, are always practicing/playing on their own and putting the work in in the gym/conditioning too. They can't let failure or not getting noticed right away get to them. They just need to keep doing their thing.

What you find is that it's a numbers game and there are far few too spots on the top teams for the number of kids that could be talented enough to take them. Rosters don't change much. So if a kid didn't break in and they are already U17, 18/19 even if they are very, very good, likely chance they won't earn they won't be on the field enough or starting or even going to some of the showcases. The window of time is too small for many kids that are still developing as very talented players---closer to 20/21 and beyond. The US doesn't work on these timescales.

This is good advice and great mentality.

DS currently is a starter and gets all the minutes right now but if he wants to get better and do bigger things, he knows he’ll be on teams where he may still need to break in and have to prove themselves. It is a grind after all .

Our club guarantees 40% for all players across the season. Ballers get 80% or more.

Across the season includes friendlies, as well as league play, tournies and showcases.

That said, the training rosters are capped at 16-18. So everyone dresses. It’s good because it allows enough playtime to get looks and xp for the benchers. Makes the whole team better, tbh.
