Florida State - would likely get to attend at the very low in-state tuition rate, & possibly get more scholarship money on top of that.

We live in Maryland and won’t qualify for FA.
What schools should my kid add to the list? We are looking for merit. Prior to the score improvement we were just thinking about state schools like VT UMD and Pitt.
Anyone in the last cycle with similar scores willing to share where their kid received significant merit? Also my kid has mediocre AP scores- he has taken 9 so far and scored mostly 3s and a few 4s. He’s taking 5 APs this year. GPA is good all As with the exception of a semester B.
Do you regret overextending into too many APs instead of focusing on doing well in fewer of them?

13xxx would not be enough for UMD.

Was the jump in your kid's scores due to taking the PSAT? Just checking.
The increase makes it more likely that your kid would get into a selective school, where many kids have 1450+ SATs. But without financial need, that jump alone won't get much merit at schools that will come onto the list. Just get consideration.
Continue with Pitt/VT/UMD.
I agree with CWRU.
Other possibilities for $$ - Indiana, MSU
Look into Purdue as a reach, maybe Lehigh's merit policies?
Michigan for Engineering but don't expect merit

The list above that includes Michigan and UCLA is loopy. Your kid has a shot at getting in, but he isn’t going to get merit aid at those schools. Our kid had scores and GPA similar to your son’s when applying last year. Some of the places where we were advised that he would almost certainly get in AND would probably get substantial merit aid included Pitt (apply early!), U of Minnesota, U of Vermont, and Michigan State. (He was admitted to his ED school so we don’t have a verdict.)
