I find this strange too. Mine are only visible to myself and the recipient. It’s like people can’t do anything without wanting an audience.

Social media has turned us into a nation of middle schoolers.

I get this for Instagram but random money movements? It seems like such an unimpressive way to show off; that you are out in the world paying people.

I use Venmo very rarely and primarily for group trips with girlfriends but I’ve never thought to look over someone else’s transactions.

Also pretty embarrassing for people to choose public view when private is available

It works though -- it made OP feel jealous even if only for a second (I've felt that too).

People who post to social media a lot like knowing people envy them. A friend who posts a lot to sm basically told me as much -- she likes the idea that people looking and wishing they had her life. It makes her feel powerful.

At this stage in the game people know. Venmo has been around for a decade (maybe longer). A lot of people's feeds were public for a long time but eventually we all caught on and realized that was weird and changed it.

The people I'm connected to on Venmo with public feeds are also people who post a lot to social media in general which makes me think it's an intentional choice -- they want people to see.

I have experienced this too OP. Usually it's not even like "why didn't they invite me" so much as thinking "am I lame because I am not sharing sushi or going to a concert or renting an AirBnB with friends with the frequency some of these people are?" This was also always my issue with Facebook (which I ultimately left) -- I'm totally okay with people getting together without me but when I see a lot of evidence of people getting together or going on vacation when I am not doing these things I feel bad about myself.

I also wonder why people leave these transactions public. The majority of my venmo transactions are paying for services (babysitting or landscaping) or paying for something I am buying off a listserve. I think it would be so odd if people could see these transactions (and actually creepy).

Pretty sure Venmo FORCES you do link/notify all your phone book when you add the app to your phone. A lot of apps are like that. Creepy and super invasive.

People are nuts. Our one regularly after school babysitter told me about Venmo because she liked it. I then saw she had her settings on public and told her she should rethink that because it wasn’t very safe. No clue if she did. Honestly if she had not had them on public though it never would have dawned on me that what I was doing was NOT private. It is ridiculous that the default setting is not put on private.

I think it is so weird when people have their venmo set to public. I do get a giggle at seeing the married couples sending money back and forth for piddly things though.
