Take a scenic drive alone the Huron River and head to Dexter cider mill. Fall colors should be starting by then.

OP was asking about Ann Arbor and not E Lansing. There is plenty to do in Ann Arbor and nearby Detroit that will easily fill up two days. I suggest a cider mill visit also. There are a few within an easy drive. Early fall in Michigan is glorious.

It is a solid in-state choice.

I went to Michigan. My kid is going there. Nonetheless, a huge number of people in my life are MSU graduates. It produces very good quality graduates. As I said there are good scholarships for those who are on the hunt for them. And it also has that classic football-basketball-marching band sportiness that some people believe is the pure essence of college. Which is why U of M and MSU pretty much take all the top students from our high school. PP should be less upset about someone's reco to go down the road to look at a different school. Varsity sports rivalries just aren't that important to everyday life. Unless you make that your whole personality.

MSU does have good scholarships for their top undergrad candidates. And they have programs that U of M doesn't have (journalism, advertising, and vet school are three I can think of). People on DCUM are looking for flagships beyond their own "in case" as well as having a variety of other priorities (merit full ride, etc.) There's no harm in helping them optimize their travel to the region. You want to send business to Indiana, LOL? (Also a great choice, btw...now I'm talking about 3 of the 5 schools my kid applied to.)

I went to U of M and I believe that is reasonable. One day for a campus is enough. MSU is also a source of pride for us locals.

My kid goes to school there..

- Try Palm Palace if you like Middle Eastern food.
- Don't waste money at the Zingermans Restaurant. Run down place and the overpriced food is nothing to write home about. The deli might be better but I haven't tried it.
- Be mindful of the parking meters. They are quick to give tickets/tow.

As others said, visit East Lansing/MSU, or go see the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation at Dearborn. Both are about an hour away from AA.

Hi, again. I looked through the events calendar. The students are putting on Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. There is a free concert of student-composed music. A variety of lectures. A short talk at the Kelsey archaeology museum. On Friday there's a drop-in Spanish conversation hour for students. Lots of niche stuff that would be fun for a person with the right interests. I think many of these things would be fine for a prospective student to drop in on.


In the metro area, the Henry Ford is indeed a pretty special museum. I recommend the Ford truck plant tour that leaves from the museum as the most unique possibility.

go to a sporting event (doesn't have to be a football game!)

I like Amer's sandwiches as much as Zingerman's and it's closer to campus. Agree with the Cafe Zola recommendation.

If you are flying to Detroit, just do one day in Ann Arbor and spend a day in Detroit and/or going to the Henry Ford Museum.

You don't really need two days there. Fly in, take the bus to campus, do the tour, walk around the neighborhoods that surround the main campus area, grab a meal somewhere in the state/liberty area, walk back to take the bus back to the airport.
