We're at Lowell School, and it's wonderful for our kids. It's right next to Rock Creek Park, so they use that as an extension classroom. There's also a creek in the front, where they have done a restoration project and use it for science.

Lowell has all of that, as well as a strong focus on both academics and social emotional learning.

I say this with kindness OP, since you appear to be a new parent: all independent K-3s in MoCo and NWDC near you will offer a whole lot of outdoor play and creative, hands-on, project-based learning. All of them. Every single one. Concord, Primary Day, Green Acres, Sheridan, Lowell, Beauvoir, GDS, Sidwell, Sandy Spring Friends, Bullis, St. Pat's, Norwood, NPS, Maret, and Washington Waldorf.

I would instead narrow my search using the filters of short commute and good fit with the parent community. There some _very_ significant differences among the parent cultures at these schools. Which, when kids are little, has a lot of impact on their social lives and your general hapiness as a family. Unfortunately, parent :: parent relationships have more impact on things like playdates, parties and pee wee sports teams and activities than they probably should, from the child's POV

You didn't mention parochial / parish schools as an option, but the few of these I know don't present the same level of free play nor outdoor time as the ones I listed (Blessed Sacrament and Holy Trinity in case you're curious)

We loved the outdoor time on the playground and on the cathedral grounds at Beauvoir. It's definitely a play based school. I won't dare call it magical bc I'll get savaged here but it was full of joy and a great starting place for my child who thrived at the next stop. That said, many of the schools mentioned here are also terrific based on friends' experiences. Potomac was not a good fit for us commute-wise, but it probably has the nicest campus in this area.

If you are open to K-8, Lowell has play-based learning and great outdoor spaces. Lots of Bethesda families in the community.

Primary Day is wonderful! Such a nice balance of play, outdoor time, and academics. My children thrived at PDS, and they were more than prepared for their next steps. You should definitely go visit because it is such a special place.

Thank you for this feedback! This school is quite close to us and is very appealing bc it would allow us to delay decision about remaining in private until grade 12 or considering public after grade 2.

Primary Day was the highlight of our kids elementary school years! We miss it so much. We loved the reading, math, and writing instruction. The teachers know how to make learning fun and kids get a lot of outside time.

Another vote for Concord Hill. Sounds like it could be a good fit.

Look at Potomac. There’s a bus to Bethesda. My kids went to a forest coop for preschool and transitioned right to K bc there is a lot of outdoor time. They have 90 acres and really use it. They have woodland recess, science outside, outdoor classrooms, a fire deck in the forest so they can have outdoor classes in thr winter, etc. Make sure you look at how much outdoor time the older grades get when you look at schools. We ended up ruling some (Sidwell was one) out bc after LS, there’s not much outdoors other than a little playground time
