No dance at Whitman. Post-Friday night game festival on baseball field, which kids begrudgingly admit is fun. That is organized by PTSA/student government. "Homecoming" is the next night and involves girls dressing up in (IMHO) tight, trashy dresses (boys wear traditional suit or khakis and tie) and going to dinner and then the monuments and taking photos that will make them cringe in 20 years. It's a bit of bizarre ritual now that the dance has been taking out but oh well. Causes a lot of stress for a lot of kids, apparently (mine included but other parents have said the same).

I could recall that my kid who graduated from Wootton had a homecoming dance during his senior year, which I’m shocked after what you just said. Is it the PTSA or SGA that’s causing the issue about not having any homecoming dances and potentially no prom?

But it’s not all academic focused, far from it. The kids attend the athletic events, football games and other social outings so why not a dance?

Wheaton has a dance.

For boys— bow ties are actually very “in” right now. Always see the guys with like a nice vest and bow tie

My friends kid (white) goes to Wootton, she told me that since most of the school population is Chinese, and their “parents won’t allow them go to dances or do anything fun (they have to be studying all the time apparently)”, the attendance for past hoco dances were ridiculously low and the school was not making any money and it wasn’t worth the effort/cost. So they decided to all together cancel the dance.

Same feeling. We've prepared nice shirt, tie, suit and dressing shoes for our eldest son, only to find out that he was the most awkwardly overdressing boys in the room. Business casual and really casual for most boys. Girls still take this opportunity to explore some fancy dressing but boys are so relaxed these days...

Wow, are the students revolting? That's crazy. At our school, the PTSA hosts the Homecoming Dance with a lot of community support and the Student Officers help organize the homecoming week events.

Wide variety at DC's school for boys - tie, no tie, suit, no suit, collared shirt, regular t-shirt. Lots of kids went all out but some did not.
Whatever he feels comfortable wearing is the right answer.

As a spin off, what DO boys wear to homecoming? DS plans on a suit, but no tie. Whouldn't tie be too much?

People thought we were nuts for having the audacity to move out of the Wootton school district for a non-W school. We were worried our kid wouldn’t have a well-rounded high school experience at that insane place. And turns out we were right.

The only MCPS school I'm aware of that doesn't have a homecoming dance is Wootton and I just learned about that fact last year on this very forum.
