This sort of crime is not unusual, though ending in death is uncommon. Happened to another American tourist in Rio a couple weeks ago. Went to a club in Lapa (sketchy neighborhood) and met two "friendly"young women. Took them back to his Air BnB and they drugged him too much. He died. (They did arrest one of the women).

Guys - If you are in your 40s and you are in a developing country and 20-somethings start giiving you a lot of attention, remember two very important things.

1) You are not that rich; and,
2) You are not that hot.



The security training you receive when posted at the US Embassy in Bogota is actually hilarious on stressing this point. Like, they touch on the women but the main examples are for men. "Guys, let's get real, you're a 2 in the US. You're fat, you're ugly, you earn a government salary. You didn't just become a 9 when you stepped off the plane. These women are NOT interested for good reasons, so stop thinking with your d*cks and get real about why you're receiving attention. Don't be like this fool who let some woman empty his entire apartment while drugged. "

victims are compliant, so normal security precautions like password managers or 2 factor authentication are ineffective.

Have you been? Was just in Medellin and was blown away by how beautiful, clean and safe it was. Colombia is not a 3rd world country, though it might have more brown people than you'd like.

Have you ever worked with governments in Latin America? If you think the US can be disorganized…

I’ve also worked with Latin American governments to repatriate remains back to the United States. It’s a complete cluster f a good portion of the time.

I find nothing suspicious about this, but absolutely feel for the grieving mother. It’s a terrible thing to not be able to get answers.

Colombia is notorious right now for men being drugged at bars/clubs by women and then taken back to their room where they are robbed of all their belongings. Often the criminal drug them too much and the person dies.
