Thank you notes have gone out of style among many. I’d say we get a thank you note maybe 50% of the time for the grad gifts.


Good manners are never out of style and, frequently, make a huge difference of succeeding in life. I had several applicants for a position and they were comparable for education, experience, and references. The one who sent a thank you letter was hired.

I have only agreed with Clarence Thomas once: "Good manners will open doors that the best education will not." I confess that I judge by manners both adults and children.

If someone gave me a quarter, I'd still have been made to send a thank you note, and I had the kind of parents who wrote down exactly who gave how much. $100 is perfectly respectable. That person's manners are not (and I'm not even from the South!).

Next time consider gifting a box of thank you notes with envelopes and stamps accompanied by instructions on assembly along with an information pamphlet on how to use the US Postal system.
