I believe the Congress Heights campus can accommodate over 600 kids and it has a library, indoor pool, STEAM room, and more. It was renovated in 2014: https://www.eagleacademypcs.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=752643&type=d&pREC_ID=1160364 It's 0.6 miles from the metro. I would love to see the PCSB tell BASIS that they can expand if they locate there...there was clearly some demand for charter elementary there.

I'm trying to say that choice of location, both now and in the past, is part of how BASIS shapes its student body to avoid having a lot of low-income students.

Those also aren’t elementary aged kids. Most of them take public transit without parents.

Basis looked to see what locations would best serve households for students the school is likely to attract, and is focusing on Dupont Circle and Penn Quarter.

They're not closing Eagle yet, so probably just ride out the year? Definitely in a death spiral.

It just surprises me because the PCSB seemed very open to the acquisition at the prior meeting. And they've approved similar deals for Friendship in the past.


Seemed the same to me as well - especially once the PCSB staff put out a memo recommending that the charter board vote to approve. But during the denial vote discussion, the PCSB charter board members expressed that they felt Eagle wouldn't get sufficient consequences and that the acquisition was happening too quickly to ensure all stakeholders could weigh in and be informed. Reasonable concerns except that the timing could have been much better if Eagle had gotten scrutiny and consequences earlier.
