Would add Mt Vernon into the mix.
Grate Falls and the Sandy Park ropes course were favorites for my kids at that age.
There are various places to kayak and canoe also. There are also some horseback riding trails, not so far away.
If you wanna go a little further, and Annapolis is also a fun place to visit.

My 7 year old loved Planet Word. We did a DC day where we did Planet Word in the morning and then Building Museum in the afternoon. They had a great Lego exhibit there also.

This area has a lot of wonderful nature centers in almost every county - I recommend them if you live near Arlington, check out the Acme Pie Company, which has a 10 or so rotating pin ball machines along with great pie...2 notes on the recommendations above...Climb Upton is hard for younger kids (if yours has previous experience climbing, then disregard) and expensive, so I would recommend waiting until older; the National Museum of Health and Medicine needs to re-do their exhibits and think more carefully about how they tell the story of disability and the human body / medical experimentation. I don't recommend.

National Cryptologic Museum (free, but closed weekends snd Federal holidays) which is off of MD-32 very near 295/BW Parkway.
It can be hard to find, so find it with an online map first, then look for signs on MD-32 as you get close.

The rope course park in sandy spring is a good one. Also jazz in the garden, drop in art making at moonshot studio in the reach (Kennedy center)

Just checking to see if there were any museums or activities in the DC area that you were really surprised that your kids like that maybe aren't as well known.
My kid likes being active Legos sports dinosaurs music rock climbing ninja courses.
We've done natural history and Lego museum. There's a rock climbing gym in Columbia that we've gone to but maybe there are some in DC or Virginia that might be super kid friendly especially for bouldering?
Thinking about the spy museum and other stuff like that.
Age is almost 7.
