My husband is going on a guy's trip the weekend of my kid's upcoming 18th birthday. Everyone is pretending it's no big deal.

I don't see it that way, but it's par for the course.

If your child is showing you this, they are expressing that they’d like both parents to attend.

There’s no hard & fast rule here, but I think if possible, both should attend.

In your case, if DC isn’t 16 yet, I would take this as a signal that you should both try to be there. It will mean a lot to them.

Depends on the party. A dinner party with just friends at a restaurant? A sleep over? Dads can miss these. A huge gala in a ballroom? Not that type.

Yes. You only get 18 birthdays with them, if that.

I'm 52 years old, and while I certainly have not spent every birthday with my mom, I didn't stop at age 18 and never celebrate with her again.
