Think carefully about whether it is better to watch events on TV rather than live. For example, I went to a high level swim meet and got to watch the races. I missed the replays, slow motions, underwaters and commentary and post race interviews that you get on TV.

Dumb question from a NP: how much, ballpark, are tickets to say, a session of swimming (with at least a final or semifinal event), or tennis, or maybe water polo?

If you don’t care too much about which seats you get, you can definitely wait until the last minute and maybe the day before to buy tickets as there will be resales and availability. But we bought all our tickets in the lottery for Paris and had amazing seats everywhere (I didn’t know that we would as you couldn’t pick seats, only categories). So if specific events and great seats are important to you, do the lottery and buy when you can

There will be multiple lotteries and ticket drops leading up to the Olympics, starting 1.5 years before the start. Don't get discouraged if you don't get what you want early on. There will be so many opportunities, even for popular events. I bought an expensive hospitality ticket for a popular event early on to guarantee I would get to go, but later saw many opportunities I could have gotten tickets for the same event for the regular ticket price. And once the official resale site opened, there were more opportunities to snag what you wanted. It's a marathon, not a sprint!

Long Beach will host some stuff, but even these venues are pretty spread out.
