You need to live in VA suburbs to be eligible in the first place. There are multiple good school districts all over DC metro in VA and MD, depends what state you prefer.

In VA it would be Langley or Mclean HS zones. Don't know about MD much.

Smart to get out. Go north(NJ,NY, MA)-better schools and funding. This area is horrible for education.

DP. Yea but you’re not going to get a house for 500k in those areas.

Do a Redfin search for 8/10 schools (excl unrated) and houses max 500k. Looks like Pasadena, Md, Lancaster, pa, parts of upstate ny would work. Didn’t look much further out.

Recognize that the Great Schools rating that Redfin uses is per-state. That is, an 8/10 in a low performing state is not the same as an 8/10 in a high performing state.

I agree that you generally want to look north, and you will be trading house price for taxes and weather (snow has costs in utilities, car, etc). Good schools aren't cheap anywhere.

That’s not true…have a relative in Rochester,NY that pays $15k+ in taxes on a $300k house…while in DC the taxes are only like $12k on a $1.5MM house.

+1. Property taxes in upstate NY are very high. Most suburban schools are very good though all across the state. Avoid city school districts. Much better than Fairfax County, but your property taxes will be high.

I don’t know the house prices…but Carmel, Indiana was profiled in the WSJ. Excellent schools…and I believe you can find homes at different price points.

What kind of weather and nature do you prefer? I think Michigan and Ohio are highly underrated-some nice neighborhoods with good schools and reasonable prices.TN and NH also underrated and no income tax.

Anonymous wrote:New Jersey has places with good schools that have real houses in nice neighborhoods for less than $500,000. Look at places in Northern/Central NJ like Bridgewater, Hopewell, Clinton, Hillsborough and surrounding communities. The taxes will be higher, so you need to factor that in too.

OP, what factors do you think make schools "good" in your opinion?
