The issue here OP was you were not involved in the choosing or planning. You left it up to her and then complained it sounds like the whole time.

You sound like you had high and unrealistic expectations, did absolutely no work in the research or planning, and then complained about everything. If I was your SIL, I would say then leave. Flyer home on your own at the next port.

DH complained about something on a cruise, who BTW does nothing in planning travel. Well then DS and I can go do the excursion and DH can sulk in the room. Better he not come and sulk and whine and be downer the whole day and ruined our day. We had a lovely day without him.

We went on a cruise to Alaska on Royal Caribbean and it was fine. It sounds like you went into with a bad attitude.

I have never wanted to go on a cruise either. But we went because family was going. It was totally fine. Food was good - not amazing - but good and some of it was great. No upgrades. Plenty of quiet spaces. Of course entertainment was cheesy but we participated and had fun. I learned some interesting corny things! I did the fitness classes. We stared at the ocean and saw whales in the distance. Beautiful scenery.

Loved just sitting around chatting with family while spotting the whales. We did some excursions.

I mean, maybe not luxury but we enjoyed it enough to consider doing it again. It was easy to plan and I enjoyed not worrying about spending while on the ship.

Well it’s safe to say she will never plan another trip for you so no need to worry about that!

I think the lesson here is don’t try to talk someone into a vacation because odds are they will hate it and resent you for trying to plan it. My family does this: “we’re going to X. We’d love it if you’d join for all of part of it!” The end. I feel bad for SIL because she clearly thought she was planning a nice vacation but probably oversold the amenities to OP and OP didn’t really understand what was involved. I’d suggest OP also skip National park vacations because if she thought the food was bad on an RCI cruise, she would definitely hate 90% of what is served at the national parks.

I think it’s important for everyone to know what kind of vacationers they are and they aren’t. I used to be game to go anywhere and now I basically don’t want to go to any country without decent infrastructure and a functioning government and free press. My husband feels very strongly about not wanting to go anyplace that doesn’t have a comfortable mattress. It’s vacation so it’s important to know what your lines are, and be honest with yourself and others about them.

I am a little curious which specialty restaurants they tried on the ship and what they did for their excursions.

I went on an Alaskan cruise 15 years ago, with RC and loved it. I thought the food was amazing. Room was tiny birthday only paid for a non porthole room so expected that.

I had posted my experience on NCL a couple of weeks ago. I think I should be glad they had buffet style food, because there was a lot of variety, and it was pretty decent.

Sorry you had to experience it to realize the truth about cruises. Unless they are small luxury charters/private yachts, they suxk.
