Pool in Fairfax County -- We can remain under our covered pavilion or any other covered area (bathrooms, etc.). Pool itself reopens 30 minutes after last thunder/lightning.

Off the pool deck completely for thunder. Leave the grounds/buildings if lightning is seen. We have a large grassy area and don't have seating on the pool deck so it is easy for them to check.

Leave the pool deck immediately and the bathrooms. (NOVA) Leaving the building is a bit bad at least for the folks that rode bikes to the pool. I drive for this reason even though I'm in walking distance. I've been tossed for thunder too many times and I have a kid really scared of thunder. Also all the damn gear and my house is about three blocks but up hill coming back.

Sending you to the car is a flag that its' about insurance.

You should be inside.

Today the pool manager said we had to be off the pool deck completely. In the building or in our cars.
Apparently part of the insurance states this is what’s supposed to happen and we just haven’t been doing it.

This was for distant thunder, no lightning, no actual storm.

First, thunder does not occur without lightning. Not ever.

Second, light travels much more quickly than sound, almost one million times more quickly. It is possible to see distant lightning and not hear thunder. It is much less likely to hear thunder and not have nearby lightning.

Distant thunder without nearby lightning is like seeing and smelling forest fire smoke and not being concerned about a nearby fire. Not that likely.
