Honors precalc

That just seems backwards to me.

1) Can anyone speak to the Honors PreCalc experience at Blair recently?

2) If he switches out after a couple of weeks - will it mean rearranging his whole schedule? He's a kid that doesn't love change and I can see this being stressful for him after getting into a routine for the rest of his classes.

Thanks.

Magnet honors precalc at Blair was very intense. Tons of homework. Not sure how that compares to just honors precalc. Might depend on the teacher. The first semester magnet teacher was beyond terrible

Any other MCPS got rid of Honors Pre Calc and replace with AP?

Blair purposely "pairs" many Honors math classes with non-Honors at the same level in the same period because kids switch so often so it's really unlikely he'd have to tear up his whole schedule if he switches. He might want to double check with the counselor that his assigned class has that option once the schedules come out. If not, which I think is unlikely but who knows, they can redo your child's schedule before the first day of school so that he can feel assured he has that option without having to switch other classes later.

For 2), it just depends on whether there is an opening in a regular class at the same time. At a large school like Blair, chances are probably better but definitely a risk of having schedule changed. Hopefully they can just move one other class if so, but only the counselor would know answer. At our school, they ended up canceling a period of honors and making it regular because so many kids needed to be reassigned a few weeks in. So I imagine a lot of kids got shuffled

Wasn’t on our HS pathways either but lots of kids still do it, including mine. A lot of that info isn’t kept up to date or they think of it as an exception. Not sure, but ask the teacher.

This is almost ten years old. Lots of kids drop down from H. Prevalence to PreCal. It is known for being a tough course. Start with H. PreCal and then determine whether to stay or drop down.

Most kids go on to AB if BC Calc , Calc w/Apps or AP Stats.

My kid took Honors Alg 2 but didn’t think Honors Pre Calc would be a good fit. Many kids dropped down from Honors Pre Calc. Regular pre calc was incredibly easy. I wish there had been AP Pre Calc for the in between students like DS. Took Calc AB and struggled to get a B but scored a 4 on AP test. W school.

I do think it's school and teacher dependent but it takes some kids a little longer to really understand abstract math. It's a developmental thing like reading and it does not mean you're not good at math. Your student could actually be pretty decent at math and find Algebra 2 hard.
