I was chatting with a friend about how nice it would be to take a short Uber on-demand instead of the place we are visiting’s scheduled public transportation, but the ride was $4 and my husband would want to tip at least that amount, and $8 for a quick five minute ride seems crazy when we can do the train for so much less. My friend was aghast that we even tip for a ride that short.

So, what’s the story with tipping an Uber?


I tip them generously bc they aren’t making that much money. The payment system has changed dramatically over the years.

Having had to work for Uber as a food delivery driver to supplement our income in 2020, I definitely tip better when using a rideshare or ordering food delivery because what the companies give on base (and yes, I know, I know, the drivers can choose not to do this and all thar but when you're struggling financially, you take what works in the moment) are abysmal.

We rarely order ride shares but do use Door Dash about 3-4x a month and regardless of the amount, minimally tip $10, so no, I don't think $10 was too much.

Uber is not cheaper anymore.

I mostly take it for work. I tip 20% consistently. For both small and big fares. If it is a horrible ride I will do 10-15%. (Unless they are rude or something then 0 but that virtually never happens).

If I have to pay the same as a taxi then I’m getting a taxi! Much safer. You’re in a marked car, drivers are screened and licensed, etc.

Uber is supposed to be cheaper!

I don’t tip on Ubers. The whole point is that you’re paying them directly (almost) and they have very low overhead and a ton of flexibility. I don’t feel bad about it.

I'd bet a million to one that your DH is also awesome in other ways. Yes - he might be overtipping but tbh - it's a small amount to pay and it's a crummy job - and I'm sure the driver is grateful.

I'm convinced that tipping habits show other admirable character qualities - I would let it be.

i don't tip on uber. never had an issue getting a ride very quickly so not sure if the ratings make a difference.

Are you sure? On Lyft I looked it up and I have a "good tipper" badge. Makes up for never winning a gold medal ... (Joking).

No one is forcing them to wake up, that's literally their job, and they get to decide when they work. If they're up at 3am, they're done working by 11am and going to bed at 8pm.

This is why I tip, regardless of how good or bad the ride is.


As a pp noted,the driver cannot see if/how much you tipped until they have already rated you (or declined to do so). So if that’s your reason for tipping you’re wasting your money.
