This is so true. DS and DW asked me what division we were in the other day and they were so shocked we were in a low-tier division. The only thing he cares about is what time he has to swim to get into the top 16 for all-stars. Oh and that he keeps his streak of all-star cut times at every meet (this one is more important.). I have adopted his way of thinking since and have enjoyed myself more this summer.


That may be true for lower-division teams, but kids swimming on upper-division teams both know AND care

This is so true. Our team will most likely move up next year, but swimmer are not really thrilled about it. They are already concerned about going winless next year against much stronger teams. Summer league is for fun. I totally agree with what you said about being in a division with other teams have kind parents, kids with good attitude.

I don’t think using division results would do anything to make the meets more competitive or make a better system. Take a look at times from relay carnival, which gives you a (albeit imperfect) snapshot of depth. There are generally very few teams from the bottom half of the league who could compete with the top half. And a lot of top half teams that could place at all stars but won’t have a chance to swim at that meet bc they didn’t win division.

Using only low age times to determine next year would be more accurate. Not involved enough to know if it is even possible to run data like that.

In any event, there will be no perfect system to predict only the best match-ups. That is why you swim IRL. Anything can happe.

I think you'd have to take into account that (like plenty of others) not all of these teams fill all of their lanes at all of their A meets. That is probably going to result in fewer digital meet victories in the computer system. If I were trying to guess at these, I'd look back at the meet results and stack them according to the number of gaps. That would give you a rough (and imperfect) sense of who has the better chance to move up.
