I'd describe it as 30% swimming, 30% silly fun, 30% community building, 8% intense competition, and 2% junk food. My kids are club swimmers too, and swim on their high school team, but a lot of kids on their summer swim team only swim in the summer, including at least a handful of teens.

My kids' summer swim experience definitely has a higher percentage of junk food - but otherwise this is spot on!

I grew up in Texas and Summer Swim was a huge thing. I started swimming the summer I turned 6 for my summer club, then transitioned into Club swimming in the Winter! Very fond memories.

I also spent some time in Ohio and while it wasn't as big/popular, summer swim was at the local town pool.

I just remember riding my bike to practice and eating ice cream after the meets. I still have my jacket from the team. I didn't swim during the school year - it was just the summer.

This is really cool!

My H grew up in Northern Jersey and he had it, they had a summer dive team too. It was a town pool. I grew up in the midwest and also had summer swim. I remember my dad out there in a dress shirt and tie timing meets when I was a kid!

There are tons of suburban rec swim leagues all over. Austin TX has several - Austin hills (5 teams), north Austin (8 teams). Sacramento has has suburban swim league (8 teams). Memphis TN has one (8 teams)This area does seem have a lot of them though.

My wife was on a team on Staten Island when she was younger. I do not know how big it was-- she switched from the swim team to the diving team after 4 years.
