Personally I would pick a day trip that didn’t require a car. Most of these places can easily be reached by train. I’d probably sign up for a tour (hopefully private or at least small) before renting a car just for the day but ymmv.

Just a heads up that I went to Venice in February and it was beautiful, but absolutely freezing. It was difficult to roam through the canals because I was so cold. My suggestion would be Barcelona or Madrid.

I would do Versailles as a day trip. It’s not far but can easily be a full day with tours and stuff, but we are an architect need and history nerd.


Yes Versailles, Giverny, Fontainbleau are all easy day trips.

Strasbourg is lovely. You could also go to Normandy— Mt St Michel is a little farther but doable as an overnight.

OP here - Because one of us has never been to Paris, I think we'll do Paris in February. I will keep Venice in mind for subsequent February travel, though! Love that idea.

Easter is very late this year - April 20! February will not be crowded.

I did Lisbon for 5 days then Porto Santo for 5 days. Perfect mix in February. Also did Athens then Santorini in February

Definitely Seville and Granada. We've been there at Christmas and March and enjoyed pleasant walking temperatures. It's unbearable in summer.
