But that’s not where the costs stop. If you don’t buy the upsold one through the cemetery there can be steep charges to have it placed.
Note: if parent is a veteran you can get a free marker/bronze place marker. The cemetery still charges for installation.

Please don't pay for embalming, a fancy coffin, a cemetery plot, headstones, etc. Money is for the living, not the dead, and spending that money by giving it to the scammy, exploitative funeral industry is like lighting your money on fire. Not to mention the modern funeral industry is an environmental disaster.

Don't let anyone guilt you into paying a ton of money for people who are dead and can't enjoy their fancy coffin, headstone, or cemetery. And don't feel guilty for one second.

Really? Not in most families I know. I have the added wrinkle of being international. I don't even know which country I want to be buried in! My childhood was spent moving from country to country with my father's job...

Maybe it's a jewish thing, or a "my family" thing? But it's both sides of my family. Just pick which country you think you'll enjoy haunting the most.


If you don't want to be cremated but want to be buried somewhere else (far) I'm guessing complicated/expensive?

I googled and you can get a simple grave marker that goes flat on the ground for $199.

Some cemeteries have these for ease of mowing.

Cremation. If they put your ashes in the ocean, you'll circle to all the continents where you lived.

I paid for my dad's as my mother claimed not to have access to money. I paid for hers from her estate. Not everyone has parents who pay for these costs ahead of time.

A headstone is not a necessary expense, especially a fancy expensive one. If the person didn’t have enough in their estate to pay for it, I would skip. It’s simply not needed and not something worth putting a stress on anyone’s finances. Save your money for the living!

At the funeral home they tried to sell me on buying an expensive casket for the cremation and I said lol no cheapest option possible please.

So what identifies the plot now? Do you have to put a headstone? Can you put a cement marker? Search online and see if they will work.
