I can not fathom all the DCUM "omg are they cheap?!?" posts. No, most likely, they need the additional $300 to pay for food or bills. Not everyone is a Senior Director, guys.

For one, what family drives that far for a day trip during a holiday week, and two, they were curated in a way to suggest it was a longer trip.


My family is thinking of driving to Avalon for a day trip to see family and enjoy the beach because we have logistical issues where we can’t go for more than 1 day - even during this holiday week. Yes it would have been a long drive but it would have been fun for the kids and extended family. Your post seems to stem from other issues you have with them.

We did it for a day, but that was before kids. I don't think I would do it now.

I think people have different tolerances for driving. We took 10 hours road trips all the time when my kids were little. Not a big deal, everyone was good with the car, it was kind of fun but also boring.

A 6 hour trip for us is nothing. 3 + 3, easy.

I wouldn't want to drive 11 hours and turn around 36 hours later, but we actually have.

Sometimes it's cheaper than flying, or preferable to haul stuff. Or it's just second nature. Travel sports families do this ALL the time.

The PP who said 6 hours in the car in a day is crazy is totally foreign to me, but to each their own.

OP this is crazy but I know your SIL and BIL and they did actually do this just to trick you and their friends into thinking that they could afford a beach house.

Honestly who cares. We went for a day last month. Had something to do nearby, didn't want to stay overnight, it was fun, we took some pics, we left.

Door to beach and beach to door is more like 4 plus hours each way. 8 plus hours in the car is miserable and frankly unsafe after a day in the sun.

We used to do this all the time in high school. Leave early in the morning, stay all day at the beach, and get home late evening.

Does no one do day trips anymore? We have gone to Busch Gardens, Hershey Park, Charlottesville, all sorts of places within a 3 hour radius for the day. One of our kids went to college 3 hours away and we regularly went to watch their sports games and came home the same day. We can easily afford hotels and take vacations often. But sometimes we just want to go for the day.

Not from DC. I went to Rehoboth once during covid for the day. It was awful.
