In fifth grade, I brought 2 volumes of the encyclopedia on vacation to Jamaica. Dad had to pay extra for my heavy luggage, and he never let me forget it!

As PP said, depends on where you're going and how. Obviously, on a translatif trip, no instrument, but books and math book, sure.

Bringing the instrument really depends on the type of vacation and age of the kids. Outdoorsy and outdoor adventure stuff? No, because I can envision a hundred ways it will get damaged or lost somehow. Staying in a hotel? Maybe if the instrument isn't too loud. Visiting someone's home or an airbnb? Sure.

I don't see why you would object to books and workbooks so long as they fit in the luggage. Most likely if you have planned enough fun activities they books will just stay packed.

We brought music instrument on oversea trips when staying at relatives house. If it will be hotels you probably can’t play ( they may not allow) any music instruments without disturbing other hotel guests.

It is crucial to let the kid to learn planning their own schedule. When they are in high school you will not be able to help them plan how much time to spend on certain subject or what to study first or next. I see your child's request as a good indication. Other than packing space issues, I'd help her plan her vacation to whatever she'd like.

Packing for trips with my ADHD math loving kid is always baffling to me! I never would have thought workbooks were essential vacation materials!

It's not "work" to your DC. Your DC said "math is fun." Some kids and adults truly love math and find the puzzles of math just as fun and entertaining as card games or table puzzles. Why would you want to prevent DC from doing something they enjoy on vacation?

(My answer would be completely different if YOU were suggesting that your DC do math exercises on vacation and it wasn't something he/she enjoys. But if it's coming from them, bring it on, let them enjoy vacation time doing things they love.)
