That's a lesson on hyperacceleration for those that follow. I'm sorry the you weren't able to make the needed adjustment after first semester.

It's a shame that the school allowed that to happen, and didn't transfer your kid to Calc AB. There is no good reason to keep a kid in BC with a B grade, when AB is an option.

One B is nbd but the C is not good, especially for a kid who wants engineering.

No one can tell you this. My kid got waitlisted at a number of schools in a see of green on naviance scattergrams. Was never clear to me how far back that data goes but I believe it includes data before test optional. I’d say he’s likely to be admitted but definitely not a sure thing.

Last year my kid from NOVA received $10k/yr ($46k COA) and Honors. CS 3.98UW/1560

UMD is $32K/yr CoA in state to start, before ant scholarships.

Do you actually know those who didn’t get with similar stats? Because when I am looking at the scattergram for his school he looks safe. I am aware that UMD is very competitive, but it appears that he falls within green. I am assuming that some of those kids went to the Engineering school.

You can be admitted to UMD Letters and Sciences (no immediate major) and be rejected from Engineering. (If that happens, you can try to reapply to Engineering during first year.)

Mine similar, but I think 3.86 is too low. 2 Bs is like a 3.96uw. Also, mine was music and math, so they may have been more interested in that diversity of major. I agree with the PP that OP 's kid will be lucky to get in. Test scores will help. Fingers crossed for admission, but assume you will not get any merit.

To the person who said they don't admit by major, it's not entirely true. Engineering school is limited enrollment program.

DD (MCPS) had a 1590..forget GPA...I think she had 2 Bs...magnet HS. She got free tuition (not room and board) Computer Science.

The profile to get a Banneker Key scholarship is high. Originally, some of the scholarships were for minorities, but they had to change that.

What I have observed is that BK scholars are either valedictorians and/or have an Ivy League profile. For example, a kid who gets admitted but can’t afford HYSP would likely take a BK if UMD offered it. UMD is very good at identifying Ivy-quality students and offering them BKs.

With respect, I don’t think your child has the profile but it never hurts to apply.

Mine did not have the Ivy League profile and received no merit.

One of my neighbor's kids received a UMD President's scholarship (1/2 tuition covered for four years) and an invitation to the Honors Program. MCPS student, not URM.

Excellent grades, test scores, high academic rigor, 2 very involved ECs, national award.

Rejected from Ivies & other top schools, probably due to the caliber of students from their public school.

+1. If you are from MCPS or HCPS better make a backup plan. Engineering at UMD may not happen.

Kid has 75th percentile UMD TO inflated SATs and a couple of Bs. Chances of direct admit to engineering are very good.
