Spoke with the camp director - she is doing fine. IN fact, when the director asked her if she would feel better calling me she said "why?" so I guess it was short lived. She was pretty embarrassed about her period, but seems happy now.

I'm glad I didn't rush out to get her.

Go get her. She needs to know she can count on you.

I remember as a kid really looking forward to an activity I'd always loved. When I got there, I realized that most of the kids my age hadn't signed up this year. The only ones who had were not at all the kind I would hang out with. That's my first guess about what's happening.

But I also echo a pp that it's possible something bad happened and she won't tell you. I have a kid who came home from college mid-semester anxious and stressed. She said she didn't know why she felt that way all of a sudden, but over time it became clear that there was much more to the story than what I heard at the very beginning.

Agree to talk to camp director but I would not send your kid home. I say that as someone who was miserable my first year at an 8-week sleepaway camp and begged to go home early.

I also don't think it is a great idea for kids to be able to call home. Kids have their ups and downs at camp -- when you just get the occasional phone call it is hard to put that in context the way you can when they are home. My kid is currently at a camp where we have virtually no contact for a month, later on he is going to a camp that has a free phone for kids to use to call home - I am kind of dreading it even though I miss him.
