I used to run strenuous hills when I had a terrible bout of Covid. Felt rough but I love pushing my body

My sibling and I are on opposite sides and wondering who is right. They work out every day no matter what. They had Covid and still went running even though her body hurt.

I feel like when you are sick you need to let your body rest and recharge and working out will make it worse.

Thoughts?

I would work out with a cold but it’s insane to work out with the flu or many Covid cases. And it many cases, it will prolong recovery. You know you are compulsive about exercise if you can’t take a few days off.

I work out if i can, it’s pretty rare that i can’t do a little something. My body is so used to it that i think it goes into autopilot. Someone I feel better after working out when sick, and sometimes i feel the same, but never worse. I always hold out hope that i can expel the demons while sweating when sick, lol. I think it helps.

If I'm just feeling a little off, I still work out. I have pretty bad allergies and don't always sleep well so I often feel a little off. If I'm actually sick, I take it easy, but try to do more walking so I can at least get my steps.

I have done a normal workout before with some mild cold symptoms because my body was itching to move even though I didn't feel 100%. Where I've been severely congested or had a cough, but still had energy otherwise, I dial it back a bit but still move - e.g., a barre workout instead of a peloton ride, or if I'm really dragging but no fever, maybe a walk or a light yoga workout (at home, not in the studio, of course). If I have a fever, I'm not working out; a fever is a sign that your body is devoting its energy to getting better and you shouldn't divert that energy or you'll be sick longer. Same with breathing difficulty - don't even try to push it there!

This is a sane approach.

Not knowing when to rest is a disorder. If your body is sick, it's already working overtime. Skip your stupid workout, rest, hydrate, and let your body work.

When I was very sick, I did mild movement to keep the blood moving around. I wouldn't go out and run--and I was too sick to do that anyway. When I had COVID, my heart rate would spike to 120 just walking a few feet.

If it’s just a cold I work out like usual. Can sometimes help clear out my sinuses. I have young kids and I get frequent colds…if I didn’t work out when under the weather I would have to take many weeks off. If it’s something more serious like the flu and my body feels achey/tired I take time off.

I don’t workout if I have a fever, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, or significant chest congestion. Those conditions correlate with when I tend to feel worst/weakest, so I have no desire to exert myself. I might try to take a walk just to get out of the house if I feel up to it, but that’s it.

Otherwise, I’ll generally do lighter workouts. My primary exercise is Peloton, so I’ll take a lower intensity class if I feel under the weather. This makes returning to full-on exercise when I’m better much less onerous. For weight training, I’ll do bodyweight or light weight.

When I had covid, I was very cautious about exercise because of the post-exertional malaise/long covid thing. For the first few days, I had a fever and significant congestion, so I didn’t do anything. Once the fever subsided, I started to take walks just to be outside. Once I tested negative, I got back on the bike but took low intensity classes for a week or so while I built up my stamina.

At the beginning of an illness, I don’t. It almost always makes me feel worse. After it peaks and I start improving, I start working out again.

People with covid recover slower and can get complications if they tax cardio and respiratory systems during illness
Exercise bulimics will do what they do, if that's not you read up

No. I’ll recover faster if I rest and focus on hydrating.

When my body says rest/sleep, I listen to it.

Covid? ef-no. That's crazy town
Fever? no
Mild cold? Yes, yoga or a light workout actually helps.
