It's much more complicated for HS. Students submit their course requests in Jan or Feb, and admin figures out how many sections of each class will be offered the following year. (A number likely being decreased now because of the budget allocations.) One of the APs is usually the master scheduler. The counselors feed students' course requests into the system and it makes a first pass at assigning students to individual sections. Then they spend time over the summer rejiggering everything to correct errors and try to balance class sizes. Sometimes kids' electives aren't available given their other classes and scheduling conflicts, so they have to go to alternates, which causes more rejiggering. The fall schedule isn't final until the end of August. And then a lot of kids have whole new schedules for the second semester starting in late January.
