Cards have been $5+ for over 10 years. For kid birthdays my DD makes cards - card stock or construction paper and markers. She loves drawing or writing her friend a special note. I only buy cards for graduations or weddings - to insert a giftcard. And my mother still appreciates a card for mothers day or her birthday. These I get from the Dollar Tree.

I also sometimes make them myself. We have so many damn crafting supplies.

I'm cheap, but you've got me beat.

I once went to a Building 19 (super super discount store in New England - like railroad salvage stuff) and for $10 got like 300 greeting cards made by that company that does super high-end coffee table art books. Some are kinda racy, but it was the best buy ever.

Amazon popup birthday cards for niece and nephew. They are $10 now but only 2 kids so wtf.

Especially if it's an unusually clever card, I don't write on it. I put a removable sticky on the inside and write my message. I want the person receiving it to have the option of passing it along to someone else.

Oh, I buy the bulk box in Costco when they have it, then periodically I refill with cards from the dollar store. I just buy a few that I like from every category so that I have them. I also buy my gift bags from the dollar store and have those on hand too. Sometimes a random store like Lidl will have a bunch of nice bags or cards for sale.

Florist shops, gift shops, CVS if there's a line I like (such as the Brandave and Strange Planet ones). I will also sometimes buy a fistful of cards just to have on hand, like these:

One of the best things I did was buy a pack of 100 of plain cards for kids. They had like 10 different animal designs, and they even worked in high school. Pink zebra card for a 16 year old boy - yes.
Then we just kept a few starbucks and amazon gift cards on hand. Instant gifts, ready to go.
