I don’t have an answer, but I hope things work it for your husband.

It makes me mad that every type of firing is viewed as bad when people sometimes get fired because of a crazy boss or because they didn’t want to go against their values.

No one ever gives the company a bad mark yet the employee has to bear the bad impression of any firing.

I sure as hell HOPES he gets denied for clearance because he DID lie!

I don't want my taxpayer money paying the salaries of dishonest people.

Wow. he deserves to fail the clearance.

Your tax dollars have nothing to do with this. It's a corporate job, nothing government related.

oh ok I thought it was a security clearance in which case he would definitely be screwed

You literally just made that up. It's always the faux righteous hollering for no reason.

I hope the OP's husband starts and keeps the job. He made a mistake, realizes it and is contrite. None of us are perfect.

No one wants a liar working for them.

This!!

Don't lie about employment dates. Those get verified.

You can sometimes be a tad evasive about reasons for leaving unless you are blatantly asked, but you cannot get away with fake employment dates.

I think it is funny that she made it sound like he got fired because he had integrity, and would not lie.

Did he sign an application that said everything on the form was true? That might even be some kind of criminal offense.

I suggest he call HR and clean up his mess . And learn from this.

This is OP. Yes, there is deep deep irony here. Lessons have been learned. He is an honest person and is experiencing an existential crisis of sorts as this unfolds. He knows he made his own bed here but the snowballing was real. I feel terrible for him and think maybe he should just withdraw his application and pursue other things with a clean slate.

Coming clean is a bad idea. You'd better hope they miss it or don't care when they verify.

Quickly, tell new company he got fired when he disclosed the application.

Hiring Manager:;"Why did you lie your application?"
DH: "Because I was fired for not lying at my old job."
HM: "So, are you saying that you learned from that experience that lying is good?"
DH: "Sure. "

^^ I mean the dates of employment. Can't remember the details but it was a little sketchy.

I rescinded an offer a couple years ago to a candidate where the resume, linkedin, and background check didn't line up. We questioned the candidate's integrity. It probably depends on the company but I think it could certainly be rescinded.

I field background check calls for our former employees and am responsible for background checks on new hires. Prior to being hired, employees go through an HR interview, and the first question is 'Why are you looking for a job right now?'. Most people are honest about it; in so far as if they're out of a job, they'll say it (layoff is the usual reason, followed by "not compatible with goals", and having to change jobs for family)

When I field calls, they generally just verify dates of employment and job title. About 25% ask if the employee is eligible for re-hire, which is answered honestly. Anyone fired for cause is of course not eligible for re-hire. That is the only situation where we answer questions regarding termination; that information is not volunteered. On background checks that we do, if an employee is not eligible for rehire or if there is discrepancy in information provided, it raises a red flag. They are given the opportunity to explain, but most of the time, the offer will be rescinded. No one wants to start off an employment relationship with a lie.
