Post 06/12/2024 11:13     Subject: Why do our kids in NOVA go to school so much longer than other places?

This last week and a half of school has been pointless in Loudoun.

My MS kid had to turn in her Chromebook on June 4 or 5. The big locker clean out was Friday June 7. They've only watched movies and played games all of last week and this week. Only a few teachers even had them do work after the SOLs ended in late May.

I see no reason why school can't end here right before or after Memorial Day like in so many other places in the US.

My nieces and nephew go to a private Catholic school that has many more days off and half days than kids here in Loudoun and yet they got out the Friday before Memorial Day.

Equity. You have to make up all those religious holidays somewhere

They go to school for 9 hours a day? Really? I find this hard to believe.

In LCPS we have a bajillion days off and we also have 15 snow days built in. Let's kill off some of the holidays and make them excused absences (Lunar New Year, really?) and have only 5 built in snow days. If we have a blizzard snow year (less and less likely) we can makeup days at the end (which people can miss if they need.)

All school is a waste after SOLs and APs in May anyway.

What schools are out specifically for Halloween? I'm in Prince William and I know in the 2022-23 school year the students had October 31 off-but not for Halloween, it was for a teacher workday/conference day that they have every year at the end of the quarter. That year it just happened to fall on Halloween, but it was not because of Halloween.

Exactly, and if for some reason they wanted to have a holiday, it should be AFTER Halloween with the kids out late and full of too much candy.

They have two additional hours of school per day? Wow! What are their school hours?!
