Enola Holmes—movies are a lot of fun

Second the Anne of Green Gables (1980s PBS movies)—so good!

Pride and Prejudice. My daughter just had to read it in high school and loved all the adaptations, of which there are *many*.

You've got the old BBC (1980s?) series, the newer (2000s?) BBC series, the Keira Knightley movie, Bride & Prejudice, the LDS version, Bridget Jones' Diary, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies... also Lost in Austen (very funny) and Austenland.

There are 3 books and 3 movies (on Netflix.) The books are all excellent and the first movie is absolute perfection. The other 2 are good but not the masterpiece of the first one.

This is also fun to read because the main character loves to bake and there are lots of food discussion interwoven in the story. It would be really fun to bake chocolate chip cookies as a mom and daughter order Korean take out and make Peter’s favorite cupcakes.

This was my recommendation too. When I taught 8th grade the girls consistently enjoyed that series.

She’s NOT into sci-fi or fantasy, so no Harry Potter or Hunger Games, please! I’d love it if it were something coming of age or having to do with a teen girl or even a teen girl and her mother, but it’s fine if not. I can’t think of a single thing. Crowdsourcing hoping someone has a great suggestion that’s not mainstream. Thanks!

I suppose she wouldn't like Divergent series?

The movies are terrible, unfortunately.

This is a good one. There is a huge difference in age of Winnie between the book and movie, though.

First thoughts were Little Women (Great Gerwig) and Anne of Green Gables (CBC).

If she hasn't already done Matilda by Ronald Dahl, do that, then watch both the movie and the musical on Netflix

Also some of these may be geared younger, but still worth it:

Cheaper by the Dozen
Alice in Wonderland - so many movie versions
Wizard of Oz (it's a large series but so many people only read the first one. Ozma is my favorite. I also like Return to Oz and the movie Even though I think it's by a different author. Could also read and watch Wicked. The film version of the musical is being made.)

Books my kids and I both liked but have not yet seen the movie of so I don't know if good:

The One and Only Ivan
The BFG

In the U.S., it's available on NetFlix.
